Leeds Bradford Airport is proud to be a bid backer and an official ‘Airport Partner’ behind the Leeds bid to become European Capital of Culture 2023.

Over recent weeks, numerous launch events have taken place across the region and beyond, calling for people to get behind the cultural bid, which would bring a whole host of cultural events to the area, to showcase the fantastic city in all its glory. The bid seeks to deliver a whole host of events throughout 2023 and involves communities, organisations, businesses, schools, colleges and universities.

The judging will take place in the coming months, with judges travelling into the city through various points – including Leeds Bradford Airport.

Tony Hallwood, aviation development director, said: “It’s so important for us, and the whole business community, to be behind this bid. Culture is an integral part of the city and the wider region; creating a real buzz and excitement about what Leeds has to offer is such an exciting prospect.

“As the airport closest to the bid city, we will be the gateway to judges and visitors; creating a lasting positive first impression of the region is important to us and a crucial part of why we felt it so imperative to be involved. We very much look forward to seeing all of the creative and fabulous work being put together in the coming months and are very proud to be involved in this initiative.”

Sharon Watson, chair of the Leeds 2023 Independent Steering Group, said: “We are proud to have Leeds Bradford Airport as our official Airport Partner in the Leeds bid to be European Capital of Culture in 2023. Through the support of businesses like LBA we will be able to welcome people from across Europe, and the world, to come and see just what a fantastic and culturally vibrant city Leeds is.”
