Fire & Rescue

Air travel continues to be the safest mode of transport available. This is due to a combination of the ever advancing technology and the strict way in which the industry is regulated.

To comply with the legal requirements, Leeds Bradford International Airport employs a full time fire service. The following pages aim to give you an insight to the interesting and demanding role of the Airport Fire Service.

The Fire Service at Leeds Bradford International Airport operates a four watch system. These are designated Red, White, Blue and Green. Each watch has a compliment of eleven personnel. All watches consist of a Fire Station Manager, three Watch Supervisors and seven firefighters.

Leeds Bradford International Airport operates 24 hours a day; Rescue & Fire Fighting Service (RFFS) facilities are provided to cover these operations.

Fire Engines

Pictured above are the three major foam tenders and the Rapid Intervention vehicle in use at the airport today. Each appliance is kitted out with an array of rescue tools & equipment and large quantities of fire fighting media.

Internal Equipment

To comply with Civil Aviation Authority requirements, the crews and vehicles must be available and ready for immediate turn out at all times, 24 hours a day. When the crews are alerted, they must be able to reach any part of the airfield within two minutes and begin fire-fighting operations.
