Formerly the capital of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro is a bustling city blessed with golden sand beaches, breathtaking mountains and an invigorating nightlife. In previous years Rio hosted the 2014 FIFA World Cup and will hold the Summer Olympics in 2016. Home to over 6 million people Rio is the second largest place in Brazil with plenty to offer.

If the party life is for you then Rio is sure to take you under its wing. Recognised as hosting the biggest carnival in the world, Rio Carnival is celebrated by natives as well as other surrounding countries. Rio’s festivities now attract over two million people per day; covering the streets in vibrant show-stopping costumes, floats and samba music.

Perched upon the summit of Mount Corcovado, Christ the Redeemer is quite the eye catching landmark. The religious monument was built by French sculptor Paul Landowski in 1931 and at 98 feet tall it can be seen anywhere in Rio. However that doesn't stop its 1.8 million annual visitors! As a predominantly Catholic city you will discover many beautiful buildings that hold historic importance to Rio and its people. Built over an extensive period from 1775 to the late 19th century, the Candelaria Church is a significant Roman Catholic establishment with tours available throughout the year.

Rio is a perfect destination if sun, sea and long stretches of gorgeous sand are what you’re looking for. Relax, people watch or get involved in a game of volleyball with friends. It’s the four kilometres of glorious Balneario beach which makes Capacabana a world famous hotspot. Its neighbouring beach Ipanema boasts a slightly calmer attitude although you wouldn't have guessed it, with its eclectic range of nightclubs, bars, cafes and people from students to professionals as well as a proud LGBT community.

If nature is close to your heart, you will fall in love with Rio! Make sure you take a Tijuca Forest Tour and cable car your way to Sugarloaf Mountain – viewing some fantastic panoramic sights along the way. With endless beaches, vibrant people, refreshing wildlife, cultural museums and mesmerising churches, it would be impossible to run out of things to see and explore in Rio de Janeiro. Grab your feather hat and see what life in Brazil is all about!
