As Germany's third largest city, Munich sits in the heartland of the proudly independent and fiercely traditional state of Bavaria.

Famed for its seasonal charms – the beer-friendly Oktoberfest, and its countless Christmas markets around Sendlinger Tor and Rindermarkt – Munich is much more than great food and drink, although these attractions alone should convince anyone to grab a quick and easy flight to the city.

Modern Munich combines old and new in striking and beautiful ways. From the stunning Gothic architectural delights of the city centre at Marienplatz and the Frauenkirche to the cutting-edge developments at the Olympic Park and the nearby BMW Headquarters, you only need to take a quick trip on Munich's fantastic public transport systems to experience one of the many pockets of hustle and bustle.

Of course, if you want to briefly escape the countless high streets, museums and churches in Munich, you can instead experience the miles of greenery at the Central Park-trumping Englischer Garten. It's the only place in the world where you can drink a litre of beer under a Chinese tower then watch surfers on the manmade Eisbach, a stream that's created an unconventional sports community 190 miles away from the nearest coast.

However, a lot of Munich's true delights are little-seen by tourists, so it pays to be an explorer. For example, a quick walk through one of the many modest doors of Ludwigstrasse will uncover the outstanding beauty of Ludwig Maximilian University, as well as the Theatine Church, which offers nothing short of Vatican grandeur.

Why should we spoil all the surprises, though? Check out Munich for yourself –  you could be enjoying the city's festivities within a few hours of take-off.
