Small but perfectly-formed - aside from one rather obvious hiccup in its building regulations a few centuries ago - Pisa combines an excellent location with stunning architecture and culture.

Found just a few miles away from the Mediterranean coast in the country's north west, Pisa's excellent transport links to Florence make it an essential stop-off for anyone looking for a quintessential Italian experience. It's also a great place to run wild in the aisles - with city shopping opportunities at town prices, it's the perfect place to stock up on your favourite fashions and fayre.

A short flight to Pisa International Airport - which is so close to the city centre, you could walk there in half an hour - will soon acquaint you with the (in)famous Leaning Tower of Pisa, part of the Piazza dei Miracoli (Square of Miracles) UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It's not just because of calamitous masonry that it earned this merit; the incredible Pisa Cathedral, fresco-laden Camposanto Monumentale and Pisa Baptistry - the largest of its kind in Italy - are among the most beautiful buildings anywhere in the world. With over two-dozen churches and palaces in walking distance, this is the town that keeps on giving.

Those looking for a further city experience can take an hour's train ride to Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance. As home to Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael and Leonardo, as well as Galileo, Machiavelli and Giotto, there's no escaping this city's incredible lure. No wonder it's one of the top-100 most-visited tourist destinations in the world. Why not help it climb the rankings with a quick flight to Pisa yourself?
