There are few cities as pretty as Amsterdam. Every turn leads you to another perfectly photogenic spot, and that's in no small part thanks to the plethora of canals and row after row of colourful, traditionally Dutch houses.
As well as being picture-perfect, Amsterdam is also a city full to the brim with art and history. You'll find the Van Gogh Museum here, as well as many galleries featuring work from current artists living in the city. In fact, this bohemian vibe flows through into the many brilliant independent shops, cafes, bars and restaurants that occupy the city centre, along the Damrak, Warmoesstraat and beyond.
Amsterdam's history is indisputable too. Home to the renowned Anne Frank House, there is plenty of war history to be found in the city. Alongside this, you'll be able to discover the lighter side to the country's past, exploring the Netherlands' deep roots in beer production. For this, be sure to visit the Heineken Experience, and the Brouwerij t' IJ. The latter is a microbrewery at the foot of a windmill - few things are more typically Dutch!
As you might expect for a nation with such an association with the tulip, Amsterdam also comprises some beautiful gardens and green spaces. Should you visit in the spring or summer months, a visit to Vondelpark is a must. Here, you can walk or cycle along winding footpaths that meander through lawns, across ponds and around stunning gardens.
