Vilnius has the traditional characteristics of a capital city you’d expect. However as an old medieval town, it sure has it's quirks. Vilnius is Europe’s largest baroque town; as you explore the centre you’ll find a plethora of Orthodox and Catholic churches with stunning architecture and neck-breaking steeples. It’s even a part of the UNESCO World Heritage list.
Walk through the narrow cobbled streets of the Old Town and explore the diverse styles of the town from Gothic to Renaissance. Here you’ll find the Gediminias Hill with its 13th century castle. Choose the 50km hike up or use the lift; the city views including Cathedral Square and Vilnius Cathedral are just as rewarding either way.
If that doesn’t excite you, make sure you visit the popular flea markets dotted around the town. Explore the local culture by picking up bargains in fresh produce, old books and antique Soviet memorabilia for a unique keepsake.
There is certainly a lot to do in this quaint city, but it is small enough to ensure you don’t need to travel far to find an adventure. And being only 2 ½ hours away from Leeds Bradford Airport, this destination would be perfect for your next adventure abroad.
