Soak up the island's atmosphere

Throughout either February or March, the island is enveloped in carnival atmosphere. From fireworks to the crowning of the Carnival Queens, you can expect excitement, colour and plenty of fun parading through the streets. Make sure you head to the Parque de Santa Catalina – it's the central hub of the celebrations.

For a taste of the island's culture, the Santa Ana Cathedral and Columbus House are well worth a visit. You can find some great art and architecture here, and walk through the museum, too. There are plenty of opportunities to view some modern art as well, with the likes of the Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno and the more classical pieces on show at the Museo Diocesano.

After soaking up some culture and embracing your carnival spirit, you may want to find time to relax on one of the four main beaches in Las Palmas. For more unusual grey sands, La Laja Beach is popular with surfers as its waves are a little bit stronger. Las Canteras Beach is one of the most visited, no doubt due to its size, golden sands, and easy access to great local amenities.
