Host to quiet streets around a stunning harbour, Stavanger still packs quite the punch. As the fourth most populous area in Norway, this urban city has more than enough to offer budding travellers. The city of Stavanger is centred on its harbour, encompassed with narrow cobbled streets that are buzzing during the warmer months.

Home to almost two dozen museums there is certainly plenty to see. Locals and tourists alike spend hours visiting the beautifully designed Norsk Olemuseum; showcasing Stavanger’s historical background in oil using high-tech interactive displays and fascinating reconstructions.

Whilst walking around, you’re bound to stop off and there’s no better place than one of the idyllic Norwegian cafes. A top pick is Boker and Borst, complete with bohemian decor, quality beverages and a dynamic atmosphere both day and night. If an interesting nightlife is what you’re after, rest assured as Stavanger city awakens at night, especially on the weekends. Dance the night away at Cafe Sting with DJs playing the best soul, house and hip-hop beats.

The Stavanger Botanical Garden lies west of Ullandhaug tower and includes stunning views stretching over Jæren, Hafrsfjord and the North Sea. Or perhaps you’d prefer to enjoy a relaxing afternoon at Solastranden Beach – one of the most popular beaches in the Stavanger region. Active travellers can try their hand at golf, water or wind sports. Historians will be excited to know this idyllic beach is also home to remnants of WWII structures that can be seen on the southern side.

Norway is bursting with spectacular natural sights including icy glaciers and giant fjords, nature lovers will revel in the natural beauty Stavanger has to offer. The famous Preikestolen (The Pulpit Rock) is a mountain which towers over the Lysefjord in Rogaland. Hikers can trek the well prepared track and be rewarded with the most stunning views at the top of the 604 metre-high plateau. However expect around four to five hours of hard work before you reach the summit.
