Once known as the capital of Italy, it’s now fondly referred to as the heart of Italy. Famously home to Leonardo Da Vinci’s ‘The Last Supper’ and the extravagant Duomo Cathedral the city has become a bustling, urban jungle that enjoys Gothic architecture, Michael Angelo’s unfinished masterpiece and a work hard, play harder attitude. Milan should certainly be high on the list of places to visit.

Alongside its famous landmarks and art is a thriving financial district, housing Italy’s stock exchange. The combination of business, design and fashion creates a buzzing metropolitan environment perfect for locals and tourists. For nature lovers though, the renowned beauty of Lake Como is just under an hour drive from the city and offers a tranquil respite from the cosmopolitan rush of the centre.

The most influential rectangle in Europe, ‘Quadrilatero d’Oro’ or ‘Rectangle of Gold’ is a powerhouse of fashion designers, including Prada, Gucci and Versace to name a few. With so many labels available in one place, it’s a shopper’s paradise! Even if you don’t splurge, it’s still well worth a wander just for the window displays. Twice a year Milan plays host to Fashion Week when the world’s most stylish celebs and designers walk the catwalk, showcasing the best of current and future trends.

When in Milan there is nothing quite like relaxing in opulent stylish surroundings and the accommodation options boast just that. From boutique to extravagant hotels, there is no shortage of fabulous rooms to suit every budget. Milan of course offers an excellent array of eateries, ranging from casual restaurants, to sushi bars, European delicacies and traditional Milanese cuisine - particularly the world famous Risotto alla Milanese. This year Milan will host the 2015 World Expo with a theme of food and nutrition; from May to October, 153 countries will be represented across more than 1.1 square miles in the northern area of the city, a foodie heaven.

The diverse nature of Milan is sure to suit everyone’s taste, and after experiencing everything Milan has to offer, your purse may be lighter but your heart will be richer.
