Soak up the Mediterranean sun in south eastern Andalucia. Costa de Almeria is famously known as Spain's sunniest region with high temperatures appearing as early as March. And with a medieval old town and landscapes of Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park there's plenty to live about Almerian winter too.

Unfamiliar with Almeria?

Unlike Spain's other tourist areas such as Malaga, Seville and Granada, the appeal to visit Almeria has only just dramatically grown in recent years. Because of this you can expect to find laid back resorts, traditional villages and unspoiled beaches. Culture vultures will be glad to know that Almeria is steeped in Arabian history and welcomes visitors each year to Alcazaba of Almeria, a fortified complex built in the 10th century. 

Located in the old part of the city, Almeria's cathedral certainly cannot go unnoticed; built in the 16th century the architecture is a Gothic and Renaissance masterpiece. If you need a break from the city bustle, Cabo de Gata is a popular nature park for travelers interested in wildlife. 

How to follow that siesta

Roquetas de Mar, once a quiet fishing town, has now become a popular location for tourists to dine by, along the harbour. The cuisine in Almeria is varied and natural, with fresh produce readily available. Fish, grilled meats and spicy Arab-influenced dishes can all be found on the menus in Almeria. Look out for Sopa de Almeria, embutidos and patatas a lo pobre for an insight into what the locals order. 

This province also holds true to it's Spanish roots with lively tapas bars and music bars welcoming many until the early hours. If you're still not ready to go home, during summer time there are also disco marquees near the beach for the true party goers. Calle Trajano and Plaza Masnou are both busy areas to aim towards for an unforgettable time.
